“Do what you will, this life’s a fiction, And it is made up of contradiction.” – William Blake

I grew up between two traditions—raised Lutheran, but with Jewish grandparents and cultural roots I couldn't and didn't want to ignore. I existed in multiple spaces that didn't always align, learning early to navigate contradictions. I had to hold multiple truths at once. And with the added layer of being a gay kid in those worlds, I was constantly making sure no one could see through the cracks. But by living that way for so long, I learned to look through the cracks and to see people for who they actually are.

I've always been drawn to stories that show the overwhelming weight of the human experience—how people fracture and fall apart, and whether they can piece themselves back together. For years, I saw myself reflected in those characters without fully realizing or, if I'm being totally truthful, admitting it. Theatre became both a mirror and a map. It was a way to understand that something beautiful could be born from fractures and contradictions.

I can now say that my contradictions are no longer fractures - or at least that some of the pieces have been glued back together. And even more, they've become the kaleidoscopic lens through which I direct. As artists, we can create a space where audiences experience the contradictions within themselves and discover how that makes us more alike than different. I'm committed to turning personal contradiction into connection—to making theatre that provokes thought, inspires change, and honors both the fractures and the resilience in all of us.
